Buenos Aires - Time To Tango!

Wednesday 18th January 2012

BA is a city of contrasts: old and new; pale and dark; clean and grubby; hugely expensive and ridiculously cheap; modern and oh, so behind the times. I could go on….but you get the picture.  I wanted to put fast /slow, but couldn’t think of one example of fast! Lots for slow though – breakfast service, wi-fi connection and credit card transactions to name only three, talk about a manana mentality!

But a really great city, with another wow moment round each corner.

 Upmarket breakfast
and coffee stop

Down-market supper, but the pizza and chicken were excellent!

Bill - written on a napkin!

run down -- fixed up

Still loved - used to be loved.
(Religion is still 'big' here)

We walked the streets of San Telmo, Centre, La Boca/Caminito and the newly redeveloped high end real estate Puerto Madero, and when we come back after the chilly south, we’ll move to the Palermo district.

On the way to the city centre we came across this great bookshop. Traditional in every way, the purchase of a HK$ 30 tango poster took around 10 minutes, involving much use of pens and carbon paper, with seemingly no interference from computers.

It's also a city of great contrasts, as the next district from San Telmo is the famous La Boca, home of the Boca Juniors foorball team and, according to Lonely Planet, a place where tourists should go in fear of their lives. It seemed safe enought to us and the Caminito district is a fabulous amalgam  of colour and edginess, with some amazing street art.

MT- Boca Juniors stadium , where I get to stand in the footsteps of the legendary Diego Maradona. A world-class cheat, but magnificent player and revered in Argentina. Not sure for which attribute.

and this chap leads us neatly into:

Afternoon venture was a tour of the Frigate Presidente Sarmiento. This magnificent boat served from 1897 to 1961, mostly as a training ship and an ambassador for Argentina, not being involved in actual combat

But the highlight so far was the evening tango show. Although this could be considered a standard tourist attraction, the artists put on a show of immense passion and emotion. Pretty well summed up Argentina so far.

A really great, great show – check www.quarandi.com.ar  if you visit BA!

So Buenos Aires can lead you an entire tour of South America. But we'll give it a miss because tomorrow we are off to

Tierro del Fuego……
