Buenos Aires Revisited - Time To Tango !

Wednesday February 1st 2012

Sooooo – today we Tango!

My shoes were bought -  no, not 5"
stilettos, but higher than I've strutted
in for some years, so I felt the part! However, I could not persuade Tinnie
to buy some of these, though he came close.......

We set off for the Confiteria Ideal in the heart of town, which we had visited briefly and decided was just the spot to bring out the best in us - unfortunately we went at 1.30pm on a Wednesday which landed us in the middle of lesson 3! Luckily we had done some homework on You Tube (to much hilarity and argument) which served us well and we managed to grasp the basics and one or two trickier bits like the Orcha - great fun for the woman - anyway mustn't bore you, it was all a good laugh and well worth the five quid entrance fee. The hall is amazing, very Art Deco, full of nostalgia and blackening glass and solid, rich mahogany - they have a milonga there at night but it's miles from the hotel, so we planned to go back to "our" local.

The people at the class were a mixed bag - mostly tourists like us, trying to get to grips, but also some youngsters. We had to swap partners regularly, which was tricky - some of the chaps were so earnest, others a laugh, but who cares if I trod on their toes - we'll never meet again! The three teachers were failed Tango “stars”, but very patient – on the whole!!

We enjoyed the lesson hugely, and went home for a siesta prior to our big launch.  We woke to pouring rain, which was not on the agenda, thank heavens I had a brolly, but did not dare risk the new shoes, so ruined my flatties getting to dinner – delicious, though hardly anyone about in such a deluge:

Then to the milonga at 11.30 to find no-one had ventured out in the rain but us and they were closing up!!!! Tragedy, luckily we remembered another one not far away - it was still in full flow as they mix Tango and Swing, so get a good turn-out whatever the weather!!!

We just had an absolute ball, didn't fall over, didn't argue too much over the steps, just really, really enjoyed it - TINNIES DID TANGO ON THE TOUR!!
